What Are Tax-Exempt & Taxable Bonds?

General obligation bonds that are tax-exempt do not require investors to pay federal income tax on the interest payments received.  General obligation bonds that are taxable require investors to pay federal and state income tax on interest received.  Typically tax-exempt bonds will have lower interest rates than taxable bonds resulting in a lower overall borrowing cost for California school and community college districts.
